"Corner Of The Store" From the Altoona Mirror publication "OUTDOOR TIMES"
I worked for the Altoona Mirror newspaper here in Altoona, PA for a number of years starting in Circulation then moving up to Finance and then to a sales position with the sportsman's publication, 'Outdoor Times". I was responsible for filling what was known as the General Store section toward the end of the monthly publications with outdoor sports related classified advertisements of all types.
After a couple months of mail and phone solicitation I suggested to my editor, Jeff, a little monthly 'hook' to draw our readers to these back pages to help support our advertisers and in turn of course our publication. To my delight Jeff agreed and even contacted award winning local wildlife artist, George LaVanish, to produce an eye catching sketch for the little project. Living within a few miles of and knowing George personally he actually gave me the original sketch which I have included in this section along with a link to George's web pages.
OK, for the next seven months Jeff published my outdoor related vignettes. These unbelievably captivating stories appeared in the corner of the General Store classified section of Outdoor Times, being distributed to twelve Northeastern states, under George LaVanish's great sketch. Then Outdoor Times downsized to just 'Pennsylvania Outdoor Times' and several people were laid off. One of them (the one you now know the best) had just bought a new house earlier that month (with another one to sell.)
I attempted to draw and captivate our monthly readership back to those ad pages with a combination of humor, life wisdom, and pointed reality. You now have the opportunity to read all those early, valiant attempts at literary genus right here.
Whether or not you are a sportsman, agree with the sportsman lifestyle, or don't care either way, please take it from me, a guy who knew some of them personally, the monthly writer/contributors to this publication were and I trust still are able to capture the true essence of a sportsman's OUTDOOR TIMES.
I just wanted to get Outdoor Times dedicated readers to come back and visit my store!
